अमेरिका के न्यू मेक्सिको राज्य के रेगिस्तान में लगी रेडियो दूरबीनों की एक शृंखला


रेडियो खगोलशास्त्र (Radio astronomy) खगोलशास्त्र की वह शाखा है जिसमें खगोलीय वस्तुओं का अध्ययन रेडियो आवृत्ति (फ़्रीक्वॅन्सी) पर आ रही रेडियो तरंगों के ज़रिये किया जाता है। इसका सबसे पहला प्रयोग १९३० के दशक में कार्ल जैन्सकी (Karl Jansky) नामक अमेरिकी खगोलशास्त्री ने किया था जब उन्होंने आकाशगंगा (हमारी गैलेक्सी) से विकिरण (रेडियेशन) आते हुए देखा। उसके बाद तारों, गैलेक्सियों, पल्सरों, क्वेज़ारों और अन्य खगोलीय वस्तुओं का रेडियो खगोलशास्त्र में अध्ययन किया जा चुका है। बिग बैंग सिद्धांत की पुष्ठी भी खगोलीय पार्श्व सूक्ष्मतरंगी विकिरण (कॉस्मिक माइक्रोवेव बैकग्राउंड रेडियेशन) का अध्ययन करने से की गई है।[1][2]


रेडियो खगोलशास्त्र में भीमकाय रेडियो एन्टेना के ज़रिये रेडियो तरंगों को पकड़ा जाता है और फिर उनपर अनुसन्धान किया जाता है। इन रेडियो एन्टेनाओं को रेडियो दूरबीन (रेडियो टेलिस्कोप) कहा जाता है। कभी-कभी रेडियो खगोलशास्त्र किसी अकेले एन्टेना से किया जाता है और कभी एक पूरे रेडियो दूरबीनों के गुट का प्रयोग किया जाता है जिसमें इन सबसे मिले रेडियो संकेतों को मिलकर एक ज़्यादा विस्तृत तस्वीर मिल सकती है। क्योंकि रेडियो दूरबीनों का आकार बड़ा होता है इसलिए अक्सर ऐसी दूरबीनों की शृंखलाएँ शहर से दूर रेगिस्तानों और पहाड़ों जैसे बीहड़ इलाकों में मिलती हैं।[3]
