सबसे सरल अल्केन मिथेन की संरचना


अल्केन संतृप्त हाइड्रोकार्बन होते हैं। इनमें केवल कार्बन-कार्बन एक बन्ध पाया जाता हैं। मिथेन, इथेन, प्रोपेन, ब्यूटेन आदि कार्बनिक यौगिक अल्केन हैं। अल्केन का सामान्य अणु सूत्र CnH2n+2 है, यहाँ n अल्केन के 1 अणु में उपस्थित कार्बन परमाणुओं की संख्या है। यदि किसी अल्केन के एक अणु में 1 कार्बन परमाणु है तो n=1, तथा अल्केन का अणु सूत्र CH4 होगा। अस्केन श्रेणी का प्रथम सदस्य मिथेन है।[1]
