अजीत कौर आजादी के बाद की पंजाबी की सबसे उल्लेखनीए साहित्यकार मानी जाती हैं। इनका लेखन जीवन के उहापोह को समझने और उसके यथार्थ को उकेरने की एक ईमानदार कोशिश है। इनकी रचनाओं में न केवल नारी का संघर्ष और उसके प्रति समाज का असंगत दृष्टिकोण रेखांकित होता है बल्कि सामाजिक और राजनीतिक विकृतियों और सत्ता के गलियारों में व्याप्त बेहया भ्रष्टाचार के विरुद्ध एक जोरदार मुहीम भी नजर आती है। पर्यावरण और सांस्कृतिक विरासत की रक्षा के लिए इन्होंने सर्वोच्च न्यायालय तक लड़ाइयाँ लड़ी है। इन्होंने दिल्ली में सार्क एकैडमी ऑफ आर्ट ऐंड कल्चर बनाया है। जहाँ आर्ट गैलरी भद्र जनों के साथ-साथ समाज के गरीब तबकों, झुग्गी के बच्चों और स्त्रियों के लिए भी खुली हैं।

इनके साहित्य पर आधारित काम


इनकी आत्मकथा खानाबदोश का कई देशी-विदेशी भाषआओं में अनुवाद हुआ है। वे अब भी स्वयं को खानाबदोश ही मानती हैं। अंगरेजी में इनकी कहानियों का संग्रह डेड एंड चर्चित रहा है। इनकी कुछ प्रमुख रचनाएँ जैसे- पोस्टमार्टम, खानाबदोश, गौरी, कसाइबाड़ा, कूड़ा-कबाड़ा और काले कुएँ हिंदी अनुवाद में भी उपलब्ध है। इनकी सात किताबें पाकिस्तान में प्रकाशित हुई है। ना मारो पर टीवी धारावाहिक बना है। गुलबानो, चौखट और मामी पर टेली फिल्म बनी है।
